Makinde Imposes Curfew in 10 Oyo LGAs Over Abducted Students

Governor Seyi Makinde has ordered a curfew in 10 local government areas of Oyo State following growing security concerns around the Old Oyo National Park and the continued captivity of abducted students and teachers.

The decision was announced on Tuesday through a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Musibau Babatunde. The statement was released to the public by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju.

According to the state government, the curfew will take effect from Wednesday, June 24, and will remain in force for an initial period of 48 hours. During the period, movement will be restricted from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 a.m. daily.

The affected local government areas are Oriire, Orelope, Irepo, Saki West, Saki East, Atisbo, Itesiwaju, Iseyin, Olorunsogo and Atiba.

The action comes amid concerns over insecurity in communities surrounding the Old Oyo National Park. Residents have repeatedly expressed worries about criminal activities in and around the area, which has become a focus of security operations in recent weeks.

Reports indicate that dozens of students and teachers were abducted last month in communities within Oriire Local Government Area. Available information shows that 39 students and seven teachers were taken by armed bandits, sparking widespread concern among residents and authorities.

Security agencies have continued efforts to secure the release of the victims and track down those responsible for the abductions. The government’s latest directive is expected to support ongoing operations by limiting movement within the affected areas and making it easier for security personnel to carry out their duties.

The curfew affects communities across the northern part of the state, particularly those located close to the national park. Residents in the affected areas have been advised to comply fully with the restriction while authorities work to improve security and address the challenges facing the region.

The development marks one of the strongest security measures introduced by the state government since the abduction incident occurred. Authorities are expected to review the situation after the initial 48-hour period and determine whether additional measures will be required based on developments on the ground.
