Obasanjo Visits Kwankwaso in Kano Amid 2027 Talks

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Thursday visited the vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, at his residence in Kano State.

Obasanjo was welcomed by Kwankwaso in the company of the NDC governorship candidate in Kano State, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo.

The visit was confirmed by Kwankwaso’s media aide, Saifullahi Hassan, who stated that the leaders held a cordial meeting. However, no details of their discussions were made public.

The private meeting has attracted attention because it comes as political parties and key figures continue consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Obasanjo and Kwankwaso have maintained a political relationship for many years. During Obasanjo’s second term as President between 2003 and 2007, Kwankwaso served as Nigeria’s Minister of Defence.

The latest meeting has also added to ongoing speculation about possible political alliances within the opposition ahead of the next general election.

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the NDC, is widely regarded as one of Obasanjo’s close political allies. The former president publicly backed Obi during the 2023 presidential election, a relationship that has continued to draw attention as political activities gather momentum toward 2027.

Although neither Obasanjo nor Kwankwaso disclosed the purpose of the visit, political observers believe the meeting could be part of wider consultations among opposition leaders as preparations for the next election continue.
