Oyo Lifts Curfew in 10 LGs, Keeps Security Operations Active

The Oyo State Government has lifted the dusk-to-dawn curfew earlier imposed on 10 local government areas around the Old Oyo National Park after reviewing the security situation. The announcement was made on Saturday by the Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, who said residents could return to their normal daily activities while security agencies continue operations in the affected areas.

The curfew was introduced to support efforts by security operatives searching for pupils and teachers abducted during attacks on schools in Oriire Local Government Area. Although the movement restriction has now been removed, the government said security personnel will remain in the area until the kidnapping crisis is fully addressed.

The state explained that the decision followed continuous monitoring of the security situation and assured residents that the ongoing rescue mission remains a priority. Authorities said the operation to free the kidnapped victims and restore lasting peace has not been suspended despite the lifting of the curfew.

The restriction was first imposed on June 24 for 48 hours, running from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. each day across communities surrounding the Old Oyo National Park. It was later extended by an additional 24 hours to allow security agencies more time to carry out coordinated operations against kidnappers and other criminal groups operating within the forest.

The affected local government areas include Oriire, Orelope, Irepo, Saki West, Saki East, Atisbo, Itesiwaju, Iseyin, Olorunsogo and Atiba.

The security measures followed the May 15 attack on three schools in the Yawota and Ahoro-Esienle communities of Oriire Local Government Area, where armed men abducted several pupils and teachers. The incident attracted widespread concern and prompted the state government to launch a large-scale security response.

Since the attack, the Oyo State Government has been working with the military, the police, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Amotekun Corps and other security agencies to rescue the victims. Officials said the search operation remains active and pledged to continue efforts until those abducted are safely returned.
