2027: Ebonyi NUJ Demands Issue-Based Campaigns

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ebonyi State Council, has called on politicians and other political stakeholders to conduct issue-based campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections. The union made the appeal on Friday after its congress in Abakaliki, urging political parties to avoid inflammatory statements, personal attacks and actions capable of creating division.

The resolution was contained in a communiqué issued after the congress held at the Dr. Sam Egwu Press Centre and presided over by the Chairman of the Ebonyi State Council, Comrade Samson Nwafor.

The union said political campaigns should focus on practical plans, policies and programmes that would help voters make informed decisions. It also urged political actors to comply with electoral guidelines and contribute to a peaceful democratic process in the state.

The congress also discussed agriculture and expressed concern over delays in distributing government farm inputs to farmers. It appealed to the Ebonyi State Government to ensure that genuine farmers receive the inputs on time to improve food production and strengthen food security across the state.

On the rainy season, the journalists advised residents living in flood-prone areas to follow safety instructions issued by relevant authorities. They also urged people to stop blocking drainage channels, saying such actions increase the risk of flooding during heavy rainfall.

The NUJ further appealed to Governor Francis Nwifuru to provide another parcel of land for the union’s proposed journalists’ housing estate. It explained that the earlier land allocated for the project at the EBSU Pocket Layout had been revoked, making it necessary to secure a new location.

The union reaffirmed its commitment to responsible journalism, peaceful coexistence and the continued development of Ebonyi State. It pledged to support activities that promote stability, good governance and public interest through professional media practice.
