Ex-IGP Abba dumps APC, joins PDP

Former Inspector-General of Police, Suleiman Abba, has left the All Progressives Congress (APC) and officially joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Abba announced his decision on Saturday during a visit to former Jigawa State Governor and PDP founding member, Sule Lamido, at his residence in Bamaina, Jigawa State.

The retired police chief said he decided to move to the PDP after consultations with his supporters and constituents, many of whom have encouraged him to contest the Jigawa South-West Senatorial seat in the 2027 elections.

He explained that his ambition to represent the district in the Senate under the APC could not materialise because he was denied the opportunity to take part in the party’s primary election despite successfully completing the screening process.

According to him, his interest in politics is driven by a desire to serve his people. He said he believes the PDP will provide a better platform for him to contribute to the development of his constituency and the country.

Sule Lamido welcomed the former Inspector-General into the PDP, describing his decision as a major boost for the party ahead of the next election cycle. He said Abba’s experience in public service and national recognition would strengthen the party and attract more supporters.

Lamido also expressed confidence that more politicians from different states would join the PDP in the coming months. He pointed to the presence of several PDP governorship candidates from northern states at the gathering as a sign that the party was expanding its support base.

The Chairman of the PDP in Jigawa State, Babandi Gumel, also received Abba into the party. He said the state chapter had already begun plans to integrate the former police chief and his supporters into the party’s structures across the state.

Gumel added that Abba’s entry into the PDP would improve the party’s chances in Jigawa South-West, especially as preparations for the 2027 elections continue.
