Peter Obi Demands Tinubu’s Resignation Over IMF Corruption Claims

In the statement titled Grand Corruption: Nigeria’s Greatest Threat, Obi described the reported expenditure as alarming, saying it accounted for about two per cent of Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product and exceeded 35 per cent of the country’s ₦23.96 trillion capital budget for 2025.

He also noted that the amount was higher than the combined allocations to the education and health sectors for the year.

According to him, if the money had been properly managed and accounted for, it could have improved hospitals, schools and other public services while creating employment opportunities through the establishment of small industries across the country.

He maintained that the reported expenditure was not an isolated issue but part of a recurring pattern under the current administration.

The former Anambra State governor accused the Federal Government of ignoring basic public finance rules, warning that such actions could weaken national institutions, worsen poverty and create more security challenges.

He said the alleged financial practices had contributed to Nigeria’s economic difficulties and increased hardship for citizens.

Obi further described the All Progressives Congress-led government as corrupt, incompetent and lacking compassion for ordinary Nigerians.

He insisted that recent developments had strengthened his earlier position that President Tinubu should resign, arguing that the administration had failed to deliver on its promises and had not managed public resources responsibly.

His comments came shortly after the IMF raised concerns about gaps in Nigeria’s fiscal reporting, prompting fresh debate over transparency and accountability in the management of government finances. The Federal Government has yet to respond to Obi’s latest remarks.
