Wike: 70% of FCT projects completed under Tinubu abandoned for 16 years

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has disclosed that around 70 per cent of the projects completed by the FCT Administration under President Bola Tinubu were contracts left unfinished for between 15 and 16 years.

He made the disclosure on Thursday during his monthly media briefing in Abuja while explaining how the administration has approached infrastructure development in the capital city.

Wike said the Tinubu administration decided to revive long-abandoned projects instead of leaving them unfinished, following the President’s directive that viable government projects should not be abandoned. According to him, the FCT Administration focused on completing inherited projects while also starting new ones across the territory.

He explained that many of the projects delivered over the past three years had been awarded more than a decade ago but were left incomplete by previous administrations. He said completing them was necessary to prevent waste of public funds and ensure residents benefited from the infrastructure.

The minister stated that if the abandoned projects had been ignored, questions would have continued to arise about why government investments were left unused. He added that the administration had already completed the majority of those inherited projects.

Wike also said the FCT Administration did not stop at reviving old contracts, noting that new road and infrastructure projects have also been introduced in Abuja and several satellite communities.

He credited the pace of development in the Federal Capital Territory to President Tinubu’s support, especially the decision to remove the FCT Administration from the Treasury Single Account. According to him, the move improved access to funds and made it easier to finance infrastructure projects without unnecessary delays.

The minister assured residents that the administration would continue to invest in projects aimed at improving road networks, opening up new districts and making life better for people living across the Federal Capital Territory.
