Obi Backs Adeboye, Says Tinubu Has Done His Best, Should Step Aside

National Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi has said President Bola Tinubu has done all he can to address Nigeria’s security challenges but believes it is time for him to step aside, aligning with recent remarks by the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye.

Obi made the comments during an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, which was published on YouTube on Thursday.

Responding to a question on why Nigerians should support his presidential ambition over other opposition figures, Obi urged citizens to judge him by his past record and compare it with the plans he is presenting for the country.

Speaking on Pastor Adeboye’s comments about the President’s efforts on security, Obi said the respected cleric was right in saying Tinubu had done his best. He, however, argued that the real issue is whether those efforts have been enough to solve the country’s growing security problems.

According to Obi, Nigeria’s current situation calls for leadership with the right capacity, competence, compassion, commitment and character. He maintained that the country’s worsening security concerns show the need for a new direction, adding that Tinubu has reached the limit of what he can offer and should leave office after his tenure.

Pastor Adeboye had earlier defended the President against criticism over insecurity during the US-Nigeria Faith Heroes Award Gala organised by the Save Nigeria Group in Washington, D.C., on June 23. The cleric said a commander-in-chief fulfils his responsibility by giving directives to security agencies and should not be expected to personally take part in military operations.

Although he defended the President, Adeboye also expressed concern over the spread of terrorism and kidnapping across different parts of the country.

He revealed that he advised Tinubu to give military commanders a 90-day deadline to improve the security situation or resign and also urged the government to identify and deal with those financing terrorist activities.
