Tinubu Congratulates New UK Prime Minister, Seeks Stronger Nigeria-UK Ties

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Andy Burnham on his emergence as the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, expressing hope that both countries will strengthen their long-standing relationship under the new British administration. The message was conveyed on Tuesday through a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to the Federal Government, President Tinubu also congratulated the people and government of the United Kingdom for carrying out a peaceful and orderly transfer of power. He described the transition as another example of the country’s democratic tradition and stable political system.

The President recalled his official visit to the United Kingdom in March 2026, during which he held discussions with the former British Prime Minister. He expressed confidence that the new administration would continue to build on the progress made during that engagement and further improve cooperation between both nations.

Tinubu said Nigeria is ready to work closely with the new British government through both bilateral and multilateral platforms. He noted that he looks forward to meeting Prime Minister Burnham to discuss areas of mutual interest and expand cooperation under the Commonwealth and other international forums.

The Federal Government also wished the new Prime Minister a successful tenure in office, assuring him of Nigeria’s commitment to working together on shared priorities and addressing global challenges facing both countries.

Nigeria and the United Kingdom have maintained strong diplomatic, political and economic relations since Nigeria gained independence in 1960. Both countries continue to cooperate in trade, investment, security, education, healthcare, migration, climate issues and regional development through various partnerships.
