PDP Will Survive Crisis, Contest 2027 Elections – Turaki

The Interim National Working Committee Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Tanimu Turaki (SAN), has said the party will overcome its internal crisis and participate in every category of the 2027 general elections.

He made the declaration on Thursday during a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja, where party leaders met to review a recent court judgment obtained by the PDP Board of Trustees and discuss the party’s legal and political plans.

Turaki told members that the party remains united despite its leadership challenges and expressed confidence that the current crisis would not stop the PDP from remaining one of Nigeria’s major political parties. He said no individual or group has the capacity to bring the party to an end.

He also assured party members that the PDP would present candidates for all elective positions in the 2027 general elections, including the presidency, governorships, National Assembly seats and State Houses of Assembly.

Speaking on the party’s internal dispute, Turaki recalled the 2016 leadership crisis that resulted in the Ahmed Makarfi-led caretaker committee. He said the PDP survived that period and believes the party will also overcome its present difficulties.

According to him, the stakeholders’ meeting was called to carefully study the court judgment and allow members to agree on a common position before making any public response, especially as some members of the interim committee were away when the judgment was delivered.

The senior lawyer also claimed that many opposition parties have faced internal problems because of the actions of those in government. He said the ruling party often benefits whenever opposition parties experience divisions and leadership disputes.

Also speaking at the meeting, former Niger State Governor and Secretary of the PDP Board of Trustees, Dr. Babangida Aliyu, encouraged members not to lose confidence in the party. He said difficult periods often test the strength of an organisation and urged party supporters to remain committed as efforts continue to resolve the crisis ahead of the 2027 elections.
