Wike Promises December Delivery of Abandoned Goodluck Jonathan Way

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has announced that the long-delayed Inner Southern Expressway, also known as Goodluck Jonathan Way, will be completed and delivered by December.

He made the announcement on Tuesday in Abuja after inspecting the road project and the ongoing construction of the Southern Parkway service carriageways in Gaduwa District. Wike said the project, which was awarded in December 2014 but left unfinished for years, is now moving forward under the current administration.

According to the minister, the 10-kilometre expressway stretches from the Southern Parkway to Ring Road II at Galadimawa and includes five bridges. He explained that only part of the road had been completed, while the remaining six kilometres are expected to be finished before the end of the year if funds are released as planned.

He added that discussions are ongoing with the Ministry of Finance to ensure the contractor receives the money needed to complete the work on schedule.

Wike described the road as one of the key infrastructure projects that will improve transportation and change the appearance of the Federal Capital Territory when completed. He also said the Apo-Karshi Road, which was awarded in 2010, is nearing completion and forms part of the government’s effort to finish projects inherited from previous administrations.

The minister said the Tinubu administration is committed to completing projects awarded between 2010 and 2023 instead of leaving them abandoned. He noted that finishing such projects would improve development in the FCT and prevent waste caused by abandoned public infrastructure.

During the inspection, Wike also visited the construction site of the Southern Parkway service carriageways, which extend from Oladipo Diya Way in Gaduwa District to Ring Road II. He explained that the road is an important transport route linking several residential districts across different phases of the Federal Capital City.

He expressed confidence that the contractor would complete the project by December as promised.
Speaking on politics, Wike reacted to the recent reconciliation with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara. He said Fubara’s decision to return to his political camp was the right one and described it as a move that would strengthen political cooperation in Rivers State.

The minister also said the governor’s renewed support for President Bola Tinubu and the Rainbow Coalition would help the ruling camp ahead of the 2027 general election.

He added that he had always believed Fubara would eventually return to the political family that supported his rise to office and said the reconciliation would allow all parties involved to work together once again.
