Tinubu approves 30%-80% salary increase for military

President Bola Tinubu has approved a new salary package for members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, raising their pay by between 30 and 80 per cent.

The approval was announced on Tuesday by the Presidency, with the new salaries scheduled to take effect from September 1, 2026. The increase will benefit about 250,000 military personnel across different ranks and is aimed at improving the welfare of officers and soldiers serving the country.

The announcement was made by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who explained that the salary adjustment was designed to give the biggest increases to personnel on the lower ranks.

Under the new structure, officers from the rank of Brigadier General up to General will receive a 30 per cent increase. Those from Colonel down to Warrant Officer will earn 50 per cent more, while personnel from Private to Staff Sergeant will enjoy an 80 per cent rise in their salaries.

The new pay package will increase the Federal Government’s yearly wage bill for the Armed Forces from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion. This represents an additional ₦264 billion that will be spent on military salaries each year.

The President said the decision was made in recognition of the commitment and sacrifices of members of the Armed Forces who continue to confront insecurity across different parts of the country.

According to him, troops involved in the fight against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats deserve better welfare and stronger support from the government.

Tinubu also said his administration remains committed to improving the living conditions of military personnel while continuing efforts to modernise the Armed Forces. He noted that the government would keep providing improved weapons, equipment and technology to help security personnel carry out their duties more effectively.

The President stated that security remains one of the foundations of national development and said the government would continue to strengthen the country’s security institutions. He added that all available military and law enforcement resources would be deployed to tackle criminal activities and protect the lives and property of Nigerians.

Tinubu also encouraged members of the Armed Forces to see the salary increase as a sign of the government’s appreciation for their service and dedication to the country. He expressed confidence that with continued commitment from the military, Nigeria would overcome the security challenges facing the nation.
