ADC accuses FG of using state institutions to weaken Osun opposition

The African Democratic Congress has accused the Federal Government of using state institutions to put pressure on the opposition ahead of the Osun State governorship election. The party said the actions being taken against the state government could affect democratic principles and the delivery of public services.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the ADC alleged that the Federal Government was taking steps aimed at weakening the opposition instead of allowing a free and fair political environment. The party also claimed that President Bola Tinubu was adopting an approach that placed political victory above democratic values.

The ADC criticised the reported freezing of statutory allocations meant for local government councils in Osun State. It argued that withholding the funds would disrupt the payment of workers’ salaries and affect primary healthcare, education and other services relied upon by residents across the state.

According to the party, ordinary citizens would bear the burden of the financial restrictions, even though they were not involved in the political disagreements. It said public resources and institutions should not be used in ways that could affect the welfare of the people because of political competition.

The party also alleged that the move against the local government funds formed part of a broader effort to destabilise the state before the election. It claimed that individuals loyal to the All Progressives Congress continued to occupy local government councils despite not being elected, while opposition members had allegedly faced intimidation and arrests.

The ADC further alleged that some political opponents had been harassed by suspected hoodlums linked to the ruling party, while security agencies failed to take appropriate action. It maintained that political rivalry should not be treated as a conflict where opponents are viewed as enemies.

Calling for immediate action, the party urged the Federal Government to restore the statutory allocations to Osun local governments and stop what it described as interference in the state’s political affairs. It also appealed for an environment where voters can freely decide who governs them without intimidation or pressure.

The ADC maintained that democracy can only thrive when public institutions remain neutral and all political parties are allowed to compete on equal terms before the electorate.
