Peter Obi Defies Okpebholo, Storms Edo, Draws Mammoth Crowd

The presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, NDC, Peter Obi, visited Benin City, Edo State, on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, where he received a large welcome from residents despite an earlier warning from Governor Monday Okpebholo.

Obi travelled to the Edo State capital to attend the funeral activities for the late Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Benin City, Most Rev. Augustine Obiora Akubeze. He joined Catholic faithful, priests and other dignitaries at the service of songs held in honour of the late cleric.

His arrival attracted a large crowd, with videos from the visit showing residents gathering along the streets as his convoy moved towards the Holy Cross Cathedral.

The visit has generated reactions, particularly because of an earlier directive from Governor Okpebholo concerning Obi’s visits to Edo State.

In July 2025, the governor had warned Obi against entering the state without giving prior notice and obtaining the required security clearance. The warning had drawn criticism from some Nigerians who argued that Obi, as a Nigerian citizen and former governor, was free to travel to any part of the country.

Despite the earlier warning, Obi arrived in Benin City for the Catholic funeral activities. His presence quickly became known among residents, leading to a large gathering around his convoy.

Videos shared online showed people standing along the streets at night as Obi made his way to the cathedral. Some residents were also seen attempting to take photographs with him.

The size of the crowd has since sparked discussions on social media, with several users questioning whether the governor would respond to Obi’s visit, given his previous warning.

Television host Rufai Oseni was among those who reacted to the development, drawing attention to Obi’s presence in the state.

Other social media users also commented on the turnout, with some saying the crowd appeared to have gathered after hearing that Obi was in Benin City rather than through a formally announced political mobilisation.

The development has added to the political discussions surrounding Obi and his activities ahead of future elections, particularly as political parties continue to strengthen their structures and public support across different parts of Nigeria.
