Former Kano State Governor and vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has asked former Zamfara State Governor Abdul’aziz Yari to reconsider his decision to serve as Director-General of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council for the 2027 election.
Kwankwaso made the appeal on Sunday while reacting to the APC’s recently announced campaign council, which is expected to coordinate President Bola Tinubu’s bid for another term in office.
The former governor questioned Yari’s decision to lead the campaign for the continuation of the Tinubu administration, arguing that the former Zamfara governor was familiar with the difficulties affecting people in the North-West and other parts of the country.
Kwankwaso said Yari had previously governed a state that experienced serious security challenges and should therefore understand the impact of insecurity, poverty, displacement and the loss of livelihoods on ordinary Nigerians.
He urged Yari to carefully reconsider his new political responsibility, particularly because the campaign is aimed at retaining the current administration.
The APC recently announced its 2027 Presidential Campaign Council with Tinubu as chairman. Vice-President Kashim Shettima and APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda were named vice-chairmen, while Yari was appointed Director-General. Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma was also appointed secretary of the council.

Kwankwaso said the structure of the campaign council showed that the 2027 election would give Nigerians a choice between maintaining the present political system and seeking a different direction.
He argued that many Nigerians were facing economic and social difficulties and described the election as a contest between citizens affected by hardship and political interests that support the current system.
The NDC vice-presidential candidate also questioned the participation of some senior government officials in the APC campaign’s financial arrangements.
He specifically referred to the Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service, Zacheus Adedeji, who was listed as Deputy Director of Fundraising, and the Director-General of the Budget Office of the Federation, Tanimu Yakubu, who was named Secretary, Finance/Treasurer.
Kwankwaso said the involvement of officials responsible for managing public revenue and national finances in a partisan campaign raised concerns about the separation between government duties and political activities.
He called on the APC and the Federal Government to explain how the participation of the officials would affect the neutrality and public confidence expected from their institutions.
The former Kano governor maintained that political campaign structures could not override the interests and choices of Nigerian voters.
The APC campaign council is expected to coordinate Tinubu’s activities and mobilisation efforts as the ruling party prepares for the 2027 presidential election.
