The incident happened on Thursday at about 5pm around the Ojuwo Olijo area, according to the Kogi State Police Command.

The attackers reportedly came out from the surrounding bush and opened fire on vehicles travelling along the road.

A blue Toyota Corolla was later discovered abandoned on the highway. Yunusa, who was driving the vehicle, was found dead inside.

Police authorities said another person travelling in the vehicle was taken into a nearby bush by the attackers.

The Kogi State Police Command has launched an investigation and deployed security personnel to the area to search for the abducted passenger and locate the gunmen responsible for the attack.

The body of the APC chairman was removed from the scene and taken to Grimard Hospital in Anyigba, where an autopsy is expected to be carried out.

The Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, Naziru Kankarofi, has ordered continued security operations along the affected route as authorities intensify efforts to identify and arrest those behind the killing.

Security personnel are also combing the surrounding forest as part of the search for the person who was reportedly abducted.

The police have urged motorists and residents using the route to stay alert and promptly report unusual or suspicious activity to security agencies.
