APGA Sweeps Anambra, Wins All 21 LG Chairmanship Seats

The All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, has secured victory in all 21 chairmanship positions and the available councillorship seats in the Anambra State local government elections held on August 29, 2026.

The Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, ANSIEC, announced the results on Sunday at its headquarters in Awka, confirming APGA candidates as winners across the state.

The commission’s Chairman, Genevieve Osakwe, said the results from the 21 local government areas and 362 electoral wards were collated and reviewed before the final declaration was made.

According to the commission, APGA candidates won all 21 chairmanship seats, while the party also secured the councillorship positions across the local government areas.

The outcome was largely expected to favour APGA, which controls the state government and was the only party to field candidates in 20 of the 21 local government areas.

The Young Progressives Party, YPP, was the only opposition party that took part in the election. It presented candidates only in Anambra East Local Government Area.

No other opposition political party fielded candidates for the August 29 election. Also, none of the opposition parties, candidates or their representatives was present at the ANSIEC headquarters when the final results were declared.

Osakwe said the election was conducted across all 362 wards in the state and described the process as peaceful and orderly. She said the commission had checked the results carefully to ensure that the figures presented during the final declaration matched those recorded at the various polling units.

The commission also confirmed the names and scores of the successful APGA candidates for the chairmanship and councillorship positions before formally returning them as elected.

The election followed the conclusion of voting across Anambra State on Saturday, with voters choosing candidates for the leadership of their respective local government councils and wards.

The ANSIEC chairman commended residents who participated in the exercise and thanked security agencies for helping to maintain order during the election.

She said the results being declared at the commission’s headquarters were a confirmation of the figures announced at the polling units after voting ended.

The process was monitored by officials and party representatives, although APGA officials and agents were the main party representatives seen at the commission’s headquarters during the final declaration.

With APGA winning all 21 chairmanship positions, the result gives the ruling party control of the leadership of every local government council in Anambra State.

The development also leaves the YPP as the only opposition party that contested the election, although its participation was limited to Anambra East Local Government Area.

The local government election is the latest electoral exercise in the state and comes amid wider political activities across Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.
