Wike Blows Hot, Says Amaechi Unfit for Vice Presidency

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has criticised former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi, saying his past handling of the judiciary makes him unsuitable for the position of Vice President of Nigeria.

Wike made the remarks on Wednesday during his monthly media briefing in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he also criticised the leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association over what he described as its growing involvement in political matters.

The FCT minister questioned the record of politicians seeking major public offices, saying Nigerians should consider their previous actions before supporting them for positions of greater responsibility.

Wike referred to Amaechi’s time as governor of Rivers State and accused him of taking actions that affected the operations of courts in the state. He also linked the former governor to an incident involving the detention of a pregnant woman who later gave birth while in prison.

According to Wike, actions that affect the independence and functioning of the judiciary should be taken seriously when assessing anyone seeking a senior government position. He argued that a politician’s past record should not be ignored simply because the person is now presenting himself as a supporter of democracy and the rule of law.

The minister and Amaechi have remained political opponents for years, with their rivalry continuing to feature in Rivers State politics and wider national political discussions.

Wike also turned his attention to the Nigerian Bar Association, accusing the professional body of becoming involved in political activities instead of maintaining what he considers an independent position on legal and constitutional issues.

He said the NBA should focus on protecting the rule of law and defending the justice system rather than becoming involved in political battles or creating platforms that could be seen as favouring particular political interests.

The minister’s comments come as political activities begin to increase ahead of the 2027 general elections, with several politicians already positioning themselves for major elective positions.

Wike’s latest remarks therefore add another layer to the political contest involving Amaechi, while also raising questions about the role professional associations such as the NBA should play in Nigeria’s increasingly heated political environment.
