Chaos in Benue as suspected thugs attack Peter Obi’s convoy

Tension broke out in Benue State on Tuesday after suspected thugs allegedly blocked a major road and moved against the convoy of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, shortly after he arrived in the state.

The incident reportedly happened along Boko Road near the Air Force Base as Obi and members of his team entered Benue. His media aide, Esther Umoh, raised the alarm over the development and shared videos on social media showing the situation on the road.

The videos showed a group of people blocking the route while vehicles in Obi’s convoy appeared to be affected by the incident. Umoh alleged that the individuals were sponsored and had gathered on the road to stop Obi from gaining access to parts of the state.

Another video shared by the media aide showed some individuals running after vehicles believed to be part of the convoy. The action raised concerns that the situation could turn violent and put Obi and members of his entourage at risk.

The exact identity of the people involved in the incident remained unknown as of the time of filing the report. It was also unclear what led to the confrontation or whether anyone was injured during the incident.

Obi’s visit to Benue comes as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections continue to gather momentum across the country. The former Anambra State governor has been taking part in opposition political activities as parties and political groups begin preparations for the next presidential election.

The reported incident also comes shortly after Obi attended the inauguration of the campaign office of Seyi Makinde, the presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement, APM, in Abuja, where opposition figures discussed plans to work together ahead of the 2027 election.

However, there was no immediate official confirmation of the alleged attack from the Benue State Government or the police.
