Wike Secured No Loans Without National Assembly Approval — Reps

The House of Representatives has dismissed claims that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, obtained loans for the FCT Administration without the approval of the National Assembly.

The clarification was made on Thursday by the Deputy Spokesperson of the House, Philip Agbese, who said there was no evidence to support the allegation against the former Rivers State governor.

The development followed claims by Senator Ireti Kingibe that the FCT Administration had taken on debts without obtaining the required approval from lawmakers.

Kingibe had raised concerns over the issue after reviewing information from the Debt Management Office covering the period between August 2023 and March 2026.

The senator said she had brought the matter to the attention of the Senate leadership and questioned whether Wike had appeared before the National Assembly to obtain approval for any borrowing by the FCT Administration.

Reacting to the allegation, Agbese said Wike had not violated any law in relation to borrowing by the FCT Administration.

The lawmaker maintained that the minister did not secretly obtain loans or bypass the National Assembly in the process of securing funds.

Agbese said the House had no information showing that Wike borrowed money without the necessary legislative approval, adding that there was therefore no basis for claims that the FCT minister acted behind the lawmakers.

The disagreement comes as the FCT Administration continues to undertake various infrastructure projects in Abuja, with questions occasionally raised about the source of funding for some of the projects.

The House’s position, however, is that there is currently no evidence that Wike incurred loans without following the required legislative process.
