2027: We’ll Bring Back Fuel Subsidy Our Own Way – Kwankwaso

The vice presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has said the party will introduce a new form of fuel subsidy if it wins the January 2027 presidential election.

Kwankwaso made the statement during an interview with Arise TV, where he criticised President Bola Tinubu’s decision to remove fuel subsidy on his first day in office. He blamed the policy for worsening Nigeria’s economic situation.

The former Kano State governor said his party would consider different methods of providing relief on fuel prices without returning to the subsidy system previously operated by the government.

He said the NDC would also pursue the construction of more refineries as part of its plan to increase local fuel production and bring down the cost of petroleum products across the country.

Kwankwaso argued that the ability of private individuals to establish refineries showed that the government could also invest in more refineries to improve domestic production.

He said increasing the number of functional refineries would help reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported petroleum products and could contribute to lower fuel prices.

According to him, the NDC would take measures aimed at making petroleum products more affordable for Nigerians if the party takes over the Federal Government after the 2027 election.

Kwankwaso’s position comes as fuel prices and the impact of subsidy removal remain major issues in Nigeria’s political debate ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The NDC is expected to campaign on economic policies aimed at reducing the cost of living, while Kwankwaso and presidential candidate Peter Obi continue to present the party’s plans to voters ahead of the election.
