The Vice Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has revealed why he sacrificed his presidential ambition for Peter Obi, insisting that the South should be allowed to complete its tenure before power returns to the North.

Kwankwaso explained that his decision was based on his belief in Obi’s credibility, shared political ideology and the need to maintain the power rotation arrangement between the North and South.

The former Kano State governor made this known during an interaction with journalists at his residence in Kano on Saturday.

Kwankwaso also warned former Vice President Atiku Abubakar against contesting the 2027 presidential election, arguing that such a move could disrupt the existing power-sharing arrangement.

He urged Atiku to support Obi, saying the South should be allowed to complete its remaining tenure before the presidency returns to the North.

According to Kwankwaso, the power rotation arrangement remains important for Nigeria’s unity and peaceful coexistence, even though it is not expressly provided for in the country’s Constitution.

He maintained that allowing one region to retain power for eight years while denying the other the same opportunity could create unnecessary political tension and division.

The NDC chieftain also expressed concern over developments within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), accusing some political actors of attempting to create confusion by pushing for a Northern presidential candidate in 2027.

Kwankwaso argued that such moves would not benefit the country, especially when the South was yet to complete its expected eight-year tenure.

He stated that the presidency should return to the North after Obi’s tenure, adding that political leaders should respect the arrangement rather than allow personal ambitions to undermine it.

The former governor further disclosed that he had contested for president three times before deciding to put his ambition aside in support of Obi.

Kwankwaso described Obi as a credible politician from the South, noting that both men shared common goals and political beliefs.

He expressed confidence in Obi’s ability to govern the country, insisting that the former Anambra State governor had the capacity to manage Nigeria’s affairs.

Kwankwaso also maintained that the South should be given the opportunity to produce the president in 2027 to ensure fairness and balance in the country’s political system.

He warned that fielding a Northern candidate at this stage could threaten national unity and peaceful coexistence, urging political leaders to prioritise the country’s stability over individual interests.

The NDC vice presidential candidate stressed that respecting the power rotation arrangement would strengthen trust among Nigerians and ensure that every region had a fair opportunity to lead the country.
