Former Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, has explained his decision to abandon former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and support President Bola Tinubu’s second-term ambition ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Okowa, who served as Atiku’s running mate during the 2023 presidential election, made his position known on Saturday at the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign rally in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The former governor said he now believes Tinubu is taking Nigeria in the right direction, adding that the president is putting measures in place to build a stronger foundation for the country.
He expressed confidence in the current administration and urged Nigerians not to support a return to the fuel subsidy system.
Okowa argued that bringing back fuel subsidies could damage the country’s progress and affect the future of younger generations. He maintained that Nigerians should support policies that would help the country move forward rather than return to the previous system.
Meanwhile, the Director General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, Senator Abdulaziz Yari, has set a target of 2.3 million votes for Tinubu in Rivers State during the January 16 election.
Yari described the target as achievable, pointing to the number of Permanent Voter Cards collected by residents of the state.
According to him, about 2.8 million PVCs have been collected out of the 3.3 million registered voters in Rivers State.
He urged APC supporters to work with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to secure the expected votes for Tinubu. Yari also expressed the party’s expectation of winning at least 80 per cent of the votes in the state.
Also speaking at the rally, Senate President Godswill Akpabio expressed confidence that Tinubu would perform well in Rivers State during the next presidential election.
Akpabio recalled that Rivers was the only state in the South-South region where Tinubu secured a convincing victory in the 2023 presidential election. He said the APC was confident of recording a similar result in the next poll.
The Senate President also praised the Tinubu administration’s revenue generation efforts, claiming that Nigeria now earns more money from taxes than crude oil.
In his remarks, APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, described the joint ticket of Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima as the most suitable option for Nigeria at the moment.
Similarly, Senator Magnus Abe defended the Rainbow Coalition in Rivers State, explaining that the group was mainly focused on ensuring Tinubu secures another term in office.
The rally brought together APC leaders and supporters, with party officials expressing confidence in their chances of securing strong support for Tinubu in Rivers State.
