Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel has saluted the resilience and patriotic fervor of Nigerian journalists and lauded their contributions towards the growth and development of our nation.
In a goodwill message released by his Chief Press Secretary, Ekerete Udoh to mark the World Press Freedom Day, Governor Emmanuel saluted the enormous contributions of journalists across the world and the nation in particular.
He said”Even at great risk to their personal safety, journalists all over the world have reported news, and distilled the policies of government to the people. You deserve our collective gratitude. I think the Theme of this year’s celebration ‘Journalism Without Fear or Favour’ is fitting and apt.
“As you mark the World Press Freedom Day, I urge you to eschew the impulse of sensationalism, of sacrificing the ideals and ethics of the profession to satisfy the narrow interests of some people. Reporting falsehood and stories motivated by blackmail, hate and animus should be discouraged and those found to engage in this aspect sanctioned.
“Journalism is a noble profession, the practitioners should see it as such and refrain from being used to tarnish the hard-eared reputation of public office holders whom we may have political differences with.
“We encourage constructive criticism which is a needed ingredient in any democratic process.
“Let me state here that I have enjoyed a robust relationship with journalists in Akwa Ibom State and I look forward to deepening the relationship as we work to provide solid democratic dividends to our people.”
