The Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, has again said Nigeria’s next president must be chosen on the basis of capacity and not by ethnicity or regional sentiments.

The governor said this during a programme on TVC, monitored in Lokoja.

He insisted that the replacement of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), “must be picked based on competence and capacity.”

The governor, who noted that the country is already divided along ethnic sentiment, said what Nigeria needed was a leader who will promote unity, as well as provide an all-encompassing leadership.

He said, “Poverty, insecurity, and maladministration do not know whether you’re from this tribe or another; what is important is who will deliver this country.
“Let us educate our followers rather than sowing certain sentiments in the polity in order to suit our purpose.”
Bello, who is nursing presidential ambition in 2023, has been against zoning of the position to the south as being canvassed in his party, the All Progressives Congress.
He said, “I am qualified for the position, especially taking into account my achievements as the Kogi State governor over the past five years.”
