Atiku, Sowore Unite in Bold Call for Nnamdi Kanu’s Release

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has declared his support for activist and politician Omoyele Sowore in the campaign demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Atiku made his position known on Thursday through a post on his official X account, saying the continued detention of Kanu has become a matter of national concern.

He stated that the government should either release Kanu or ensure he is given a fair trial according to the law.The former Vice President described the situation as one that questions Nigeria’s commitment to justice and the rule of law.

He noted that keeping Kanu in detention despite existing court orders granting him bail was a wrong approach that weakens public trust in the system.Atiku added that allowing Kanu’s case to remain unresolved would only deepen existing divisions and create more tension across the country.

He said Nigeria must take steps to close this chapter and move forward in unity.His statement came shortly after Sowore announced a nationwide movement to push for Kanu’s freedom.

Sowore, who is also the publisher of Sahara Reporters, called on political, religious, and traditional leaders—especially those from the South-East—to join what he described as a peaceful march to the Presidential Villa in Abuja.According to Sowore, the campaign is open to all Nigerians who believe that justice should prevail in Kanu’s case.

He said he had already reached out to some prominent leaders from the region, including Governors Charles Soludo of Anambra and Alex Otti of Abia, former Governor Peter Obi, and Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, urging them to support the initiative.

He revealed that while some acknowledged his message, others were yet to respond. The activist said the campaign would go on as planned, insisting that the time has come for action rather than silence.

Atiku’s endorsement adds weight to the growing demand for Kanu’s release, which has remained one of the most debated political and legal issues in Nigeria in recent years.

Nnamdi Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his arrest in 2021 after being brought back to Nigeria from Kenya.

The call from Atiku and Sowore renews pressure on the Federal Government to address the case and ensure that due process is followed in line with the country’s legal framework.
