Enugu State and Abuja are abuzz with discussions about a possible change in the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state as Governor Peter Mbah is expected to join the party.
Reports indicate that the APC National Executive Committee (NEC) may dissolve the current State Working Committee (SWC) led by Ugochukwu Agballah as early as Wednesday, paving the way for Mbah to assume a leadership role within the state chapter.
The anticipated move comes amid ongoing political tensions in Enugu, including disputes over the legitimacy of Agballah’s chairmanship. In 2024, a state High Court issued an order restraining him from acting as chairman pending the resolution of a lawsuit filed against him by members of his executive committee.
Despite the injunction, Agballah continued in his role, while rival factions within the APC in Enugu took legal and administrative steps to assert their authority.
Sources within the party revealed that the dissolution of the existing executive committee is likely to be announced soon, with the names of caretaker committee members awaiting approval from the Presidency.
APC governors are reportedly expected to visit Enugu to welcome Mbah into the party and facilitate a smooth transition. Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma is said to be involved in harmonizing the interests of existing and incoming officials, although he has previously been cautious about Mbah’s entry into the APC.
The Agballah-led faction of the party in Enugu has dismissed claims of the committee’s imminent dissolution as false, asserting that these reports are intended to distract the party and its leadership.
The group maintains that it continues to enjoy support from the APC National Working Committee and is focused on strengthening the party in the state while promoting government initiatives and preparing for the 2027 elections.
The political developments come as Mbah, the only Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governor in the South-East, is poised to shift alliances, a move that could reshape political dynamics in the region.
Both state and national party members are watching closely as the situation unfolds, with legal and administrative processes playing a critical role in determining the outcome of leadership in the Enugu APC.
