Defections Won’t Weaken PDP, We’ll Return to Aso Villa in 2027 — Bala Mohammed

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, has said the party remains confident of reclaiming power in 2027 despite ongoing defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Saturday, Mohammed explained that the PDP is quietly rebuilding its structures and working to restore public confidence ahead of the next general election.

He acknowledged that several governors and lawmakers have recently moved to the APC but maintained that efforts are in progress to keep the opposition united.

The governor accused the APC-led government of using its influence to weaken opposition parties and push Nigeria toward a one-party system. He, however, maintained that the PDP still enjoys wide support at the grassroots, insisting that defections will not affect the party’s strength or prospects in future elections.

Mohammed said that while some members may continue to defect, the PDP structure across the states remains strong. He expressed optimism that Nigerians who desire change will rally behind the party in the coming elections.

He described the PDP as the only political platform capable of rebuilding the country, recalling that most of the nation’s notable achievements were recorded under previous PDP administrations.

According to him, the party’s current leaders are determined to deliver better governance if returned to power.On the party’s forthcoming national convention, Mohammed stated that the leadership is addressing internal disputes and legal cases aimed at destabilising its preparations.

He insisted that the PDP has no faction and remains more organised than many other political parties in the country.He dismissed claims that Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah and Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara had left the PDP, saying both remain loyal members of the party.

He also said the party remains open to welcoming influential figures, including former President Goodluck Jonathan, who wish to align with its vision ahead of 2027.

Mohammed reaffirmed his commitment to the PDP, expressing confidence that capable and visionary leaders will emerge from the party to challenge the APC in the next election cycle.

He added that defections are part of politics but will not stop the PDP’s plan to return to the Presidential Villa in 2027.
