In the letter, the senator explained that he decided to leave the PDP because of the prolonged internal crisis and leadership tussles within the party, which had made it difficult for him to continue as a member.

His move adds to the growing number of defections that have strengthened the APC’s control in the 10th Senate, further increasing its majority and influence in the upper legislative chamber. With Konbowei’s defection, the APC now holds 74 seats in the Senate, while the PDP’s representation has dropped to 27.

The Social Democratic Party and the New Nigeria Peoples Party each have one senator, and the All Progressives Grand Alliance has two.The development is seen as a major setback for the PDP in the South-South region, which has traditionally been one of its strongholds.

It also reflects the ongoing political realignments across the country ahead of the 2027 general elections.
