The newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Joash Amupitan, will hold his first official meeting with the commission’s directors on Thursday at the INEC headquarters in Abuja.

The meeting, scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m., was announced in a notice issued by the Deputy Director of Publicity, Wilfred Ifogah, on behalf of the Director of Voter Education and Publicity. Members of the INEC Press Corps have also been invited to cover the opening session of the event.

Professor Amupitan, a 58-year-old Senior Advocate of Nigeria and Professor of Law at the University of Jos, was recently confirmed by the Senate after a screening process that tested his understanding of electoral and constitutional matters. His confirmation followed President Bola Tinubu’s nomination to replace Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure recently ended.

Before his confirmation, National Commissioner May Agbamuche-Mbu had been serving as the Acting INEC Chairman and presided over several stakeholder engagements at the commission’s headquarters.
Professor Amupitan is expected to be sworn in by President Tinubu during the Federal Executive Council meeting on Thursday, after which he will officially begin his duties as the new head of the electoral body.
He is widely known for his expertise in constitutional and international law and has had a long career in academia and legal practice before taking on this new national role.
