Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has been released from Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja after spending four days in detention.

His release took place on Monday, October 27, 2025, following his arrest during a peaceful protest calling for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).Sowore was arrested alongside Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu’s special counsel, Emmanuel Kanu, the IPOB leader’s younger brother, and 11 others.

The group had gathered in Abuja under the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow campaign when police operatives dispersed and detained them.They were later charged before a Magistrate Court in Kuje on October 24, 2025, for offences related to unlawful assembly and public disturbance.

The court, presided over by Magistrate Abubakar Sai’id, granted bail to all 14 defendants in the sum of ₦500,000 each. The bail terms included submission of their international passports, a verified National Identification Number, and proof of a three-year tax clearance.
After fulfilling these conditions, Sowore and the other protesters were released from custody.
His detention and release have once again drawn attention to his long-standing activism and his criticism of what he describes as the government’s intolerance toward dissent.
