Former United States President Donald Trump has warned that America may take military action against Nigeria following what he described as ongoing attacks on Christians in the country.

Trump made the statement on Saturday through his Truth Social platform, claiming that Christians in Nigeria face what he called an “existential threat.” He accused the Nigerian government of failing to stop the alleged killings and announced that he had instructed the U.S. Department of Defense to prepare possible response plans.

He said that if the situation continues, the United States could suspend all forms of aid to Nigeria and potentially launch an assault aimed at what he termed “Islamic terrorists” responsible for the violence. Trump added that any military action would be swift and forceful, warning the Nigerian government to act quickly.

The comments came a day after Trump labelled Nigeria a “country of particular concern,” a designation used by the U.S. State Department for nations accused of severe violations of religious freedom. He claimed, without providing evidence, that thousands of Christians have been killed by extremists in the country.
In response, President Bola Tinubu dismissed Trump’s allegations, saying Nigeria remains committed to protecting the rights and freedoms of people of all faiths. He reaffirmed that religious tolerance has always been part of the country’s identity and governance.
Observers note that Nigeria’s conflicts often affect both Christians and Muslims, with violence linked to regional, political, and economic tensions rather than religion alone. The country remains almost evenly divided between its Muslim-majority north and Christian-dominated south, a division that continues to influence its political and social landscape.
