The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has denied claims made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan that her passport was seized by immigration officials at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, had earlier alleged that officers of the NIS withheld her travel document on the instruction of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, preventing her from boarding a scheduled flight despite having no legal restriction on her movement.

In response, the NIS issued a statement on Tuesday dismissing the allegation. The agency explained that its officers only carried out routine immigration checks, as required for all departing passengers, and at no point confiscated or retained the senator’s passport.

According to the service, the situation may have been a misunderstanding, as no directive was received from any political figure or authority to restrict the lawmaker’s travel.
The NIS reaffirmed its dedication to professionalism and the protection of citizens’ rights during border operations across all Nigerian airports.
