PDP Pushes Ahead with Ibadan Convention Despite Internal Rift

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has stepped up its final preparations for the 2025 National Elective Convention scheduled to take place on November 15 and 16 at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, Ibadan, Oyo State, despite opposition from some factions loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

In a statement released on Thursday through its official X handle, the PDP said the Ibadan convention, tagged #Ibadan2025, would mark a major step in the party’s efforts toward internal renewal and readiness for the 2027 general elections.

More than 3,000 delegates from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory are expected to attend, alongside top party leaders, stakeholders, and international observers, including representatives from the diplomatic community.

The event will feature the election of new national officers, including a National Chairman, as part of the party’s plan to strengthen its internal structure and rebuild unity among members.

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, who is hosting the convention, has been actively leading inspection visits and overseeing logistics to ensure a smooth and well-organized gathering. The Lekan Salami Stadium is undergoing extensive preparations, including work on seating arrangements, stage setup, lighting, and sound systems.

The Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Barrister Bayo Lawal, who chairs the Venue Sub-Committee of the National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC), is supervising the final arrangements to ensure that all facilities meet the required standards.

With only two days left to the convention, workers and committee members are finalizing decorations and technical setups at the venue. The party has maintained that the Ibadan convention will go ahead as planned, reaffirming its commitment to unity, discipline, and democratic values as it prepares for future elections.
