A Federal High Court in Abuja has stopped the Peoples Democratic Party from going ahead with its national convention planned for Saturday and Sunday in Ibadan, Oyo State. The order was issued on Friday by Justice Peter Lifu.

The court also directed the Independent National Electoral Commission not to monitor or recognise any convention the party conducts without allowing former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido to take part. The judge said the information placed before the court showed that Lamido was denied the chance to obtain the nomination form for the National Chairmanship race, even though the party’s rules require that members be given room to pursue their ambitions.

The court held that the PDP must create space for eligible members to contest and must not block anyone from seeking any position within the party. It ruled that Lamido deserved the opportunity to obtain his form and prepare for the contest.

As part of the judgement, Justice Lifu ordered that the planned convention be placed on hold so Lamido can pick his form, organise his supporters, and run his campaign before the event is rescheduled.
