Accord Party Leadership Denies Chairman’s Suspension

The National Working Committee of the Accord Party on Friday rejected the announcement made in Keffi, Nasarawa State, where a faction claimed that National Chairman Maxwell Mgbudem had been suspended. The leadership explained that the action came from a group it described as expelled members working with others to cause confusion as the 2027 general election approaches.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Joseph Omorogbe, released a statement saying the Keffi meeting was led by former presidential candidate Chris Imumolen, whom the party maintains is no longer a member. Omorogbe stated that the group’s declaration had no effect on the party because it did not follow the rules of Accord and did not represent any recognised party organ.

He explained that Mgbudem remains the chairman recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission and that his name is still listed on the commission’s website. He added that the party is united and will not allow expelled members or their partners to create internal problems.

The reaction followed an earlier move by some state chairmen who met in Keffi and announced Mgbudem’s suspension on claims of anti-party activities. They also named Imumolen as the new chairman. The Accord leadership said the claims were false and were being used to mislead members and the public.

The party referred to recent court rulings, including a July 17, 2025, Federal High Court judgment by Justice Fatima A. Aliyu, which dismissed a suit filed by Imumolen and his supporters. According to the party, this judgment supports Mgbudem’s leadership and weakens the attempts by the faction to take control.

Accord’s leadership accused unnamed political actors of trying to use internal disagreements to break the party ahead of major elections. The party said its structures are still intact and that it has already reorganised itself to prepare for the coming political season.

The leadership asked Nigerians to disregard the Keffi meeting, saying it has no place in the party’s constitution. It added that the group behind the meeting is not recognised and does not have the power to make decisions for Accord.

The party insisted there is no leadership dispute within its recognised structure and that it remains focused on strengthening its position before the next election cycle.
