The Akwa Ibom State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party on Sunday said it would not recognise the national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State. The party explained in Uyo that the event did not follow court orders and therefore lacked legal backing.

The state Publicity Secretary, Edwin Ebiese, said the organisers went ahead with the convention even after two different courts halted the exercise. He recalled that a ruling by Justice Donatus Okorowo directed the party leadership to follow internal procedures, including the proper signing of the notice of convention before it could be sent to the Independent National Electoral Commission. Another order by Justice Peter Lifu, in a case filed by former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, also stopped the convention from holding on November 15 and 16.

Ebiese said the refusal of INEC to attend the convention showed that the commission acted according to the court decisions. He described the event in Ibadan as a gathering that did not produce any enforceable outcome.

The Akwa Ibom chapter said it was troubled that some members chose to take part in a process that ignored court orders, even though they had previously called for fairness and order within the party. The chapter added that it would continue to work with people who still believe in protecting the party and its rules.
It stated that any resolutions, decisions, or actions taken during the Ibadan event would not be recognised by the chapter. The state leadership urged members to remain calm while the matter continues at the Court of Appeal and said it still trusts the judiciary.
The development came the same day the PDP announced the removal of the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, and ten others for alleged anti-party activities. Their expulsion was announced during the 20th National Convention held at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan.
