A senior member of the Peoples Democratic Party, Umar Sani, said the removal of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and other party members was delayed but still necessary. He spoke on Monday about the party’s recent national elective convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, saying the exercise followed legal procedures.

Sani explained that the party had previously tried to settle the dispute through an internal reconciliation committee led by Ambassador Hassan Adamu, which aimed to mend the rift between opposing sides. However, the efforts did not yield results.

He said the disagreement had persisted for too long and the party decided to end it. One of Wike’s demands during the peace talks was that the PDP should not field a presidential candidate in the 2027 election, a condition the party could not accept. Sani noted that the party could not continue waiting for the crisis to resolve itself and had to act to prevent further strain.

He also clarified confusion at the convention over some individuals initially introduced as Independent National Electoral Commission officials. The Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, later corrected that they were national observers, not INEC representatives.
Sani concluded that the party’s actions, though late, were necessary to restore order and stability within the PDP.
