The Independent National Electoral Commission in Osun State has called on political parties to hold their primary elections in a lawful and open manner as the 2026 governorship race draws closer. The call was made by the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Mutiu Agboke, through a statement issued in Osogbo by the commission’s Public Relations Officer, Olurode Musa.

The commission explained when the primaries will hold and why the parties must follow the rules guiding internal elections. INEC fixed August 8, 2026, for the governorship election in the state, and the period for parties to conduct their primaries has been scheduled between November 24 and December 15. The REC noted that political parties in the state need to follow the Electoral Act 2022 and INEC’s approved guidelines so that their primaries reflect the true choices of their members.

INEC observed that poorly conducted primaries often lead to court cases before general elections. The commission said these issues can be avoided when parties obey the law, follow the proper process and give every aspirant a fair chance to contest. According to the REC, the commission is ready to give support and guidance throughout the process so parties can run their activities without trouble.

The commission also called on security agencies, party leaders and other stakeholders to assist in creating an environment where the primaries can take place without disorder. INEC added that it will continue to watch the activities of all political parties and take action within the law against any group that refuses to obey the rules guiding elections in the country.
