The All Progressives Congress on Tuesday reacted strongly in Abuja to a public appeal made by factional Peoples Democratic Party National Chairman, Tanimu Turaki, where he asked United States President Donald Trump to intervene in Nigeria’s political tension. The ruling party accused Turaki of making a careless request at a time when the PDP is battling internal conflict.

The incident began after a violent clash erupted at the PDP national secretariat in Abuja on Tuesday. Two factions, one linked to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and the other backed by Governors Bala Mohammed, Seyi Makinde, Ahmadu Fintiri and Caleb Muftwang, struggled for control of the party’s leadership. The confrontation led Turaki to address the press, where he claimed that Nigeria’s democracy was in danger and appealed to foreign governments to step in.

Shortly after his remarks, APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, released a statement condemning Turaki’s action. The statement argued that Turaki’s call amounted to inviting another country into Nigeria’s affairs and warned that such a move could put the nation’s stability at risk. The APC also questioned Turaki’s ability to manage the party, saying he had barely settled into his role before making what the ruling party described as a troubling appeal.

The APC noted that instead of seeking outside help, Turaki should be working to calm tensions within the PDP and restore order among its members. The ruling party said Nigerians were watching the situation closely and expected the opposition leader to focus on resolving the crisis that had weakened the PDP.
