The Sokoto State Government on Friday denied reports that Governor Ahmed Aliyu joined Abia State Governor Alex Otti during his private visit to detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu at the Sokoto Custodial Centre. The denial came through a statement from the governor’s spokesman, Abubakar Bawa, who addressed public interest that followed Otti’s visit.

The government explained that Aliyu was not in the country on the date of the visit. It said the governor had travelled to the Holy Land to perform the Lesser Hajj as of November 30, 2025, when Otti arrived in Sokoto. With the governor absent, selected commissioners and Special Advisers received Otti at the Sultan Abubakar III International Airport. They later accompanied him to the Government House, where he was accorded the usual protocol reserved for visiting state governors.

The government insisted that Sokoto is known for welcoming visitors with respect, adding that its officials simply extended normal courtesies to Otti, just as they would to any government guest, regardless of background, tribe, or religion. It also restated Aliyu’s loyalty to national unity and described him as a governor who respects institutions and supports peaceful coexistence.

The clarification followed public reactions to Otti’s meeting with Kanu, which the IPOB described as unusual. Otti was accompanied by Kanu’s brother, Emmanuel Kanu, along with Abia State’s Attorney General, Ikechukwu Uwanna, and his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma.
Kanu is currently serving a life sentence after the Federal High Court ruled against him on terrorism-related charges on November 20, 2025. Otti’s visit renewed attention to both Kanu’s detention and relations between different state governments involved in his legal and political issues.
