The incident happened around 4:10 p.m., when residents noticed the aircraft flying unusually low with smoke and flames trailing behind it. People in the community panicked as the jet approached their rooftops before veering away and crashing a short distance outside the town.
According to villagers, the two pilots managed to eject before the jet hit the ground. Locals who rushed toward the scene said the pilots landed safely with their parachutes and were later taken back to their base. A villager, who gave his name as Lukman Sulaiman, said everyone initially thought it was an attack because of the loud sound that followed the crash. Many people ran for safety before returning to check what had happened.
The aircraft burned for several minutes, and the fire was eventually put under control after personnel and a fire truck from the nearby military base arrived. Videos recorded by residents showed the jet engulfed in flames while thick smoke rose into the sky.
Some residents said the jet may have departed from the Kainji Air Force Base, though this has not been confirmed. The military had not released any official statement as at the time of filing this report.
More updates are expected as details continue to unfold.
