The Adamawa State Government has approved the release of Sunday Jackson, a death row inmate, following a pardon granted by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri. Jackson, who was sentenced to death earlier this year, is expected to regain his freedom on Thursday after all official processes were completed.
The Commissioner for Justice, Afraimu Jingi, confirmed that the paperwork required for Jackson’s release had been finalized and sent to the correctional centre. According to him, both electronic and physical copies of the documents were delivered, making it possible for the inmate to leave custody without delay.
Jackson was convicted and sentenced to death for killing a herder during a confrontation on his farm. The case later drew wide attention within and outside Nigeria, with debates around the circumstances of the incident and claims that he acted to protect himself.
Governor Fintiri announced the pardon as part of actions taken to mark the Christmas and New Year celebrations. He approved clemency for a number of inmates after receiving advice from the Adamawa State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, which reviewed their conduct while in custody.
The governor also approved sentence reductions for other prisoners, stating that the decisions followed constitutional provisions and assessments of improved behaviour. Jackson’s case had previously been discussed internationally, including calls from a United States lawmaker who appealed for his release and questioned the fairness of the death sentence.
With the pardon now in effect, the Adamawa State Government says it has fulfilled all legal steps required for Jackson’s freedom.
