Following airstrikes carried out against ISIS-linked fighters in Sokoto State, the United States has shifted its focus to the Sambisa Forest in Borno State. The move marks a return to intelligence gathering activities in the area, which has long been linked to terrorist operations in Nigeria’s North-East.
Information on the development was shared by security analyst Brant Philip, who disclosed that flight tracking data showed a Gulfstream V aircraft operating over parts of Borno State. Such aircraft are commonly used for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions.
According to the analyst, the current surveillance is aimed at the Islamic State West Africa Province, also known as ISWAP. The group is known to operate mainly in the North-East region and around the Lake Chad basin.
The renewed monitoring comes shortly after the United States confirmed missile strikes on terrorist locations in Sokoto, carried out in coordination with Nigerian authorities. The latest development suggests continued cooperation between both countries as efforts intensify to weaken terrorist networks and monitor their movements across key locations.
