The Federal Government reacted to claims circulating online about an alleged plan to target opposition politicians across Nigeria.
The Federal Government, through the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said the claims were false and based on a document it described as fake. The document, which spread widely on social media, alleged that a secret multi-agency task force had been set up to arrest, detain and prosecute top opposition figures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to the government, the document falsely mentioned a programme known as ADP4VIP and claimed it involved agencies such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission and the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit, allegedly under the coordination of the Office of the National Security Adviser.
The government stated that no such task force exists and that there is no plan to unlawfully target opposition politicians. It explained that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is focused on economic reforms, security, trade growth and improving investor confidence, not political intimidation.
The statement added that attempts to present lawful investigations as political persecution are meant to protect certain individuals from answering to the law. It stressed that the government remains committed to the rule of law, due process and the independence of anti-corruption agencies.
The Federal Government also reminded Nigerians that the Constitution guarantees freedom of association and political participation. It warned citizens to be cautious of false information, noting that misleading reports are likely to increase as the 2027 elections draw closer.
Authorities urged the public to reject false narratives and remain alert to efforts that could create tension or division in the country.
