Senate President Godswill Akpabio has ordered the withdrawal of all defamation cases he filed against several individuals, following a New Year church service in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. Akpabio made this known on Thursday while speaking at the Sacred Heart Parish during a New Year Mass.
He explained that he had instituted close to nine defamation suits in court against people he accused of spreading false claims and damaging his reputation. According to him, the message delivered by the priest during the service prompted deep reflection, which led to his decision to let go of the legal battles. Acting immediately, he instructed his legal team to discontinue all the cases.
Throughout 2025, Akpabio had been involved in a number of high-profile legal disputes linked to alleged defamation. One of the most prominent was a N200 billion lawsuit against fellow senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan over allegations of sexual harassment, which Akpabio denied. He had asked her to prove the claims in court. Around the same period, Akpabio’s wife also took legal action against Akpoti-Uduaghan, saying certain statements harmed her family’s image.
Tensions between both lawmakers intensified after Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Akpabio of playing a role in her suspension from the Senate in March 2025. She also challenged the matter in court and filed a separate N100 billion defamation suit against Akpabio and others over comments she claimed damaged her reputation.
With the latest directive, all pending defamation-related court cases involving Akpabio have now been brought to an end, closing a chapter of prolonged legal disputes as the new year begins.
