Ewor said the governor made party members believe he could take full political control of Rivers State away from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, but later abandoned the PDP and defected to the All Progressives Congress while the state was still facing political tension. He explained that many PDP members were carried along by what he described as false assurances, only to later discover that the situation was different from what they were made to believe.
According to him, the crisis began within the governor’s first year in office following disagreements with members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, which later led to the destruction of the Assembly complex. He said the situation forced President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to step in and broker a peace deal, but the agreement later collapsed, worsening the crisis and leading to the declaration of a state of emergency in March 2025.
Ewor stated that during the emergency period, another peace meeting was held by the President, but unlike the earlier one, its terms were not made known to the public. He said the failure of that arrangement later resulted in Governor Fubara leaving the PDP for the APC in December 2025, a move he described as taking the mandate given by Rivers people to another party.
The PDP caretaker chairman also alleged that instead of working towards peace after the emergency rule was lifted, the governor was openly claiming that President Tinubu would compel lawmakers to pass the state budget and also make Wike support his second-term ambition. He said such claims raised serious concerns that required clarification.
He further spoke on the PDP national convention held in Ibadan in November 2025, noting that Governor Fubara was still a PDP member at the time and was involved in activities leading to the convention, even though he later stayed away. Ewor said the convention led to the dissolution of the Rivers State PDP executive and the appointment of a caretaker committee, which he currently leads, adding that the committee remains valid pending court decisions.
On the recent visits by the FCT Minister to Rivers communities, Ewor said statements made by Wike suggested that Governor Fubara had agreed to certain conditions before the emergency rule was lifted but failed to keep them. He said while issues like a second-term bid were now the governor’s personal and party matter, the people of Rivers State deserved to know all agreements reached on their behalf.
Ewor therefore called on Governor Fubara to openly address Rivers people, Nigerians and the international community by releasing full details of the peace agreements reached with the President, the FCT Minister and the State House of Assembly. He said transparency was necessary because the mandate belonged to the people and his actions affected their welfare and future.
At the end of his address, Ewor said he aligned himself with the FCT Minister and also declared support for President Tinubu’s reelection bid in 2027, insisting that full disclosure was the only way the governor could be accountable to Rivers people ahead of future elections.
