The African Democratic Congress has recorded the entry of about 5,000 new members in Abia State, coming shortly after the former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, joined the party. The development took place in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area, where supporters moved into the ADC in a large group.
The defection was led by Bishop Emeka Nwankpa, who contested the 2023 governorship election on the platform of the Accord Party. He led his supporters to the ADC in his hometown of Umuaku, Ntigha. Those who followed him said they left their former political parties and structures, including the South East Mandate for Good Governance, before registering with their new party.
Nwankpa explained that his decision to move to the ADC was based on his belief in the party’s vision and direction. He said the party’s plans reflect his long-held views on governance that focus on the welfare of the people, fairness, and steady development. He added that the ADC provides an option for Nigerians who desire a new political path and renewed confidence in leadership.
The new members were received by the Abia State Chairman of the ADC, Don Norman Obinna, who welcomed them into the party. He said the growing number of supporters shows that more people are aligning with the ADC as the country moves toward future elections.
The development adds to recent political movements in Abia State and signals growing interest in the ADC following the entry of prominent figures into the party.
