A Lagos court has sentenced a former director in the state Ministry of Education, Olawale Faleti, to prison after he was found guilty of stealing nearly N49 million from Access Bank. The case was handled by the Ikeja Special Offences and Domestic Violence Court following charges brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
The court heard that the 64-year-old official accessed a bank credit card without authorization during the COVID-19 period in 2020 and used it to withdraw funds repeatedly over time. Investigators said the withdrawals were deliberate and showed clear abuse of access. The court ruled that the crime was serious enough to require imprisonment despite Faleti having no prior criminal record.
Faleti was sentenced to two years and five months in prison, with the term set to begin on January 5, 2026. In addition, the court ordered him to return the remaining N45.9 million to Access Bank and directed that his information be recorded in the Lagos judiciary offenders register.
The case underscores the ongoing efforts by Nigerian authorities to hold public officials accountable for financial misconduct and fraud in both government and financial institutions.
