The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, in the sum of N500 million over money laundering charges filed against him by the Federal Government. The ruling was delivered on Wednesday by Justice Emeka Nwite.
The court ordered Malami to provide two sureties, each standing for him in the same amount. The sureties must own landed property located in Maitama, Asokoro, or Gwarimpa within Abuja. The property documents are to be verified by the Deputy Chief Registrar of the court, while the sureties are also required to submit affidavits stating their financial capacity.
Justice Nwite further directed Malami to submit his international passport and other travel documents to the court. He was barred from leaving the country without prior approval from the court. In addition, both Malami and his sureties were ordered to submit two recent passport photographs.
Pending the completion of the bail conditions, the former justice minister was ordered to remain in custody at the Kuje Correctional Centre. As of the time of the report, associates and supporters were making efforts to meet the bail requirements.
The court fixed February 17 for the start of trial in the case. The same bail terms were also granted to Malami’s son, Abdulaziz Malami, and Hajia Asabe Bashir, an employee of Rahamaniyya Properties Limited.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission filed a 16-count charge bordering on money laundering against Malami, his son, and his wife. The case is expected to proceed once all bail conditions are fully met.
